The Preferment course
The six Preferment modules, step by step
Last updated: November 2026
The Preferment course has six modules taken in order: Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability, and Launch.
Rarified Life designed the modules as a sequence, with each one depending on the work before it. You cannot align your days with your values until you know what moves you, and you cannot find that until you have separated who you are from your former job title. Across eight weekly live sessions, the six modules carry you from where you are now to a named mission for your next chapter.
What are the six modules in the Preferment course?
Module 1: Introduction
Where you are right now, and why the old model of retirement was never built for someone like you.
You start from your real situation, not an ideal one. This is where people who are still working and people who retired years ago begin on equal footing.
Module 2: Identity
Separating who you are from what you did for a living.
Many accomplished people answer "So, what do you do?" with a job title. This module makes room for an answer that does not begin with "I used to."
Module 3: Motivation
Finding what actually moves you, now that a paycheck is not the reason.
Once identity is untangled from work, the next question is what genuinely drives you, so your next chapter runs on interest rather than obligation.
Module 4: Alignment
Matching your values and strengths to how you will actually spend your days.
This is where purpose becomes practical: a calendar that reflects what you care about, rather than one filled by errands and appointments.
Module 5: Accountability
Building the structure that turns intention into a lived routine.
Good intentions fade without structure. This module builds the routines that a working life used to supply automatically.
Module 6: Launch
Naming your mission for this next chapter, and stepping into it.
The course ends with a named mission and a first step, not a vague hope. Launch is the module that turns eight weeks of work into motion.
Why does the order of the modules matter?
The modules follow the way people actually change. The first three, Introduction, Identity, and Motivation, are inward: they clarify who you are and what drives you. The last three, Alignment, Accountability, and Launch, are outward: they turn that clarity into how you spend your days. Rarified Life calls this a structured path, not a self-help pep talk, because each week builds on the last.
The Identity, Motivation, and Alignment modules are also the core of how Preferment approaches finding purpose in life after 50. Each module is paired with a chapter of the book and its exercises; see how the book and homework work.
Common questions
- What are the six modules in the course?
- The six modules are Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability, and Launch. They move from where you are now, to separating who you are from your former job, to finding what moves you, matching values and strengths to your days, building supportive structure, and finally naming your mission for the next chapter.
- What if my whole identity is wrapped up in my work?
- That is exactly what the Identity module addresses: separating who you are from what you did for a living. One participant quote shared on rarifiedlife.com describes it this way: "I thought work defined me, but I discovered I am so much more." The course gives that shift a structured place to happen.
- What do I have at the end of the 8 weeks?
- The final module, Launch, focuses on naming your mission for the next chapter and stepping into it. Together with the Accountability module, which builds structure that turns intention into a lived routine, the aim is a daily life shaped by your own values and strengths rather than a list of good intentions.
- How do I find purpose in life after 50?
- Start by separating who you are from your job title, then name what genuinely motivates you now that a paycheck is not the reason, and match your values and strengths to how you actually spend your days. That is the sequence of the Identity, Motivation, and Alignment modules in Preferment.
- What does retirement transition coaching usually cover?
- Retirement transition coaching usually covers the shift from a working identity to post-work life: what to keep, what to let go, and what to build next. Preferment covers that ground through its Identity, Motivation, Alignment, and Accountability modules over eight weeks, finishing with a Launch module that names your next mission.
- Is the course useful if I am already retired?
- Yes. The course listing describes people standing in a room nobody prepared them for, with more time than they have ever had and no idea what it is for. That describes people who are already retired as much as those about to retire, and the first module starts wherever you are now.
